Dear Pat,
We have arrived safely in San Francisco and are established at 651 Stevenson Street where Patrick has found rooms for us. The children did weill during the journey. Of course there was so much to watch through the windows as we crossed so much marvelous territory. The mountains were crossed were simply ferocious, and then down into California, which is as golden a place as you can imagine. We were fortunate enough to share our trip with three Sisters of the Mercy order traveling to Sacramento to join their sisters in a new school they have founded there for girls. They were wonderful with Will and Annie, and helped me so much to keep them happy with books and stories and explanations about the views as they changed each day. I don't how I would have done the trip without them. They were as guardian angels, appearing as the train pulled out of New York, and helping me with the transition to Omaha, and then through the long stretches into the West.
Patrick is well and has been working hard as is his wont. He has finished his work for the railroad and is now in the employed laying track for cable cars here is this new city where everything, everything is growing and bustling!
But this letter was meant to inform you that we have arrived safely and to advise you of where we are, not to recount the minute details of the whole trip! I will write more, and to dear Lizzie, soon. Know that we are well and missing you and Lizzie and the little ones, dearest brother. But I am with hope in our new surroundings.
Fondest wishes,
Your Kate
