Baby, baby

May, 1914

Baby!  A baby! she thought to herself as she skipped a little on the walk home.  Mum and Annie were right.  And I must tell Jamie!  Her thoughts wondered back to Annie, who had lost a pregnancy last year.  It had hit her so hard, she hoped, but no, couldn't even think about that.  It wouldn't happen to her!

A baby, Kate thought.  How nice it will be to hold a little one.  Annie's youngest was 3, Freddie, and already pushing grandma away and running after the big boys next door.  And Ed and Loreto, it just seemed like it was never going to work for them.  Her heart went out to Loreto.  She'd lost several herself, and knew that the pain was like no other.  And to be hit with that pain again and again, year after year to keep trying.

Why can't I have a baby? Tears ran down Loreto's face as the physical ache in her chest flared. Her sisters, Ed's sisters, Marilyn. They all had such an easy time of it. Why was God punishing her?
